Eldritch 2

Dev’s Journal – 6 Dec 2024

I hit a fun milestone today: 1000 svn checkins on Tofu (Eldritch 2)! For comparison, the first game was around 1500 checkins, NEON STRUCT was just under 1300, and Slayer Shock was 1700. I don’t think that means I’m over halfway done with this game—my svn checkin count on Tofu is slightly bloated from making more regular Linux builds and Steam builds—but it is a reminder that I am making steady progress, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

I spent some time last weekend building dungeon interiors, starting with recreating rooms from the original Eldritch as a baseline so I can maintain the feel of the first game.

I also revisited some rendering stuff that had been bugging me, adjusting ambient light so it wouldn’t flatten scenes so much, and improving the quality and stability of cel shading and edge detection (especially for lights very close to surfaces).

This morning, I added a small quality-of-life feature that I realized some players will want, and made the dot reticle an option that can be toggled separately from the rest of the HUD. I like it always being there, because it helps me avoid motion sickness, but if you don’t? Turn it off! Or, turn the rest of the HUD off and leave the reticle on, why not?
