Dev’s Journal – 8 Nov 2024

I ended up making virtually no progress on the inventory screen after writing last week’s update, but I pushed through the coder’s block today and got something on screen.

Work in progress inventory screen from Eldritch 2.

There’s a fair amount left to do—obviously, the numbers shouldn’t all be 99, and I’m going to need a bunch of icons that I don’t yet have emoji placeholders for—but I’ve finally got the inventory screen being populated programmatically. The layout is data-driven, and navigation between the widgets is properly handled regardless of any empty space. The remaining work is mostly just shuttling around data that already lives somewhere in the player entity’s various inventory-related components.

This is a dev blog, but it’s also my personal blog, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t say something about the state of things here in the USA. I spent most of Wednesday in a spiral of numbness and despair, dreading another four years of the kind of chaos and cruelty we saw in 2017-2020. Part of me wanted to just unplug from news and politics—I’m a middle class white man, I’ll probably be fine—but that’s not helpful and it’s not what I believe in. Stewing in despair also wasn’t helpful, but I needed to live with those feelings for a minute and process it.

The process is ongoing. Spending time with friends has helped. We’re in this together.

I wish I could say things will be okay, but they probably won’t! It’s going to be tough, it’s almost definitely going to be worse than 2017-2020, and it’s going to take a lot of hard work to resist what’s coming. I’m still figuring out what I can do, but for now, simply saying something felt necessary. 🖤
