Quick facts:
Development time: 3 months
Engine: Unreal Engine 2
Team size: 11 (4 programmers)
Role: Lead Programmer and Game Designer

Ransacked! is an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod developed by an 11-person team in three months at The Guildhall at SMU. I was the team-elected lead programmer of a group of four programmers. I wrote the concept pitch for a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired CTF variant called Rangers and Rogues, then collaborated with lead artist Mark Flieg to fit the game rules to a 17th-century Spanish theme.

The gameplay is a class-based variation on Capture the Flag. Players can be aggressive swashbucklers or stealthy gypsies, and CTF "flag deadlock" is avoided by giving each team multiple items to steal.

I developed many gameplay systems for Ransacked! I implemented the gypsy's dagger, which dealt triple damage if used from behind an enemy. I also designed and programmed a lockpicking system using the dagger. Holding the alt-fire button for three seconds in the presence of a locked door would open it. Each team's base contained some locked doors which would open freely for members of that team but would block its enemies. This was done with a custom trigger that queried the player's team number and reacted to the alt-fire mode of the gypsy's dagger.

I also programmed a system to spawn bags of gold in random locations. I created a custom spawn point object which the level designers could place throughout their levels. The total number of bags per team was determined at the start of each round, and the server would select spawn points at random at which to place the bags. Each time a bag was successfully stolen, the server would find a new location to respawn it at.

Finally, I created the code and effects for the gypsy to turn invisible while crouching or standing still. This required a new shader for each degree of invisibility as well as for each object and weapon the gypsy could carry.
